Kung Fu Kids

Shaolin Kung Fu "Gongfu" is the most amazing way to stay in shape. I'm 53 right now. I've not missed a single class in the last 5 years teaching at the YMCA and not one student has been injured in my class or ever had a bone break.

This Shaolin Staff Class is structured into three semesters of 4-months equalling one year.

The first semester, the student learns all the basic moves, jumps, and concepts of the staff. This preparation makes it easier and safer to teach the difficult and complex traditional Staff Forms of Shaolin Kung Fu.

The second semester teaches both sides of the 2-man choreographed combat Form, "Fire & Water," made popular by its' use in the opening credits of the TV show, Kung Fu, starring David Carradine.

The SHAOLIN KUNG FU KIDS Programs were created by Buddha Zhen in 1993. While teaching his SHAOLIN KIDS classes, Buddha Zhen also taught in several elementary schools and studied many physical education manuals from the Utah school boards, athletic associations, and books by experienced Olympic traininers and coaches. After several years of experimenting with different sports and tug-of-war games that he altered into pseudo Kung Fu training competitions, the TAI CHI KIDS PROGRAM was developed with a balance of Tai Chi and Kung Fu instruction.

Combined with group readings of traditional Buddhist Dharma and Daoist principles, the students are also required to know something about every major religion in the world to pass their Belt Tests.

The Muslim 12 Tantui Kung Fu exercises are included in the first 12 months of training. These were the Kung Fu basics of Bruce Lee and the Beginner Level training of the Chinese National WuShu Team, as taught also by the Jing Mo and Chin Wu Associations, which has also certified Buddha Zhen to adverise himself as a Jing-Mo Academy.

The Yang Style Tai Chi Short Form becomes the nucleus of the 3-year curriculum as students learn to become fit and and healthy in both body and mind.

Launched in 2008, Tai Chi Buddha programs are the satellite programs offered by Buddha Kung Fu for teaching primarly, Yang Style Tai Chi.

Master Zhen the golden rooster.

Classes include the same Standing Stretches or Yoga Stretch Routine used in all Buddha Kung Fu programs.

The stretching is followed by an aerobic workout of punching and kicking exercises.

A water break is followed by bookwork and spiritual group discussions. The pages read are marked by the instructor to fulfil the reading requirements of the student's belt rank level.

Qigong exercises energize the class to perform the Yang Taijiquan Short Form of Shaolin Chi Mantis in entirety. Then, still warm with energy, the class practices the self-defense and tournament competition techniques of PUSHING HANDS, a simple contest without punching as students try to unbalance their opponent and gain a point when their opponent raises a foot from the ground.

The last part of the class is spent learning the Tai Chi Short Form "dance." Once the movements are learned, the breathing is coordinated with the movements to create a "moving meditation." As qi energy becomes apparent, it can be manipulated during the Tai Chi Form to accomplish any qigong effects.

Lastly, the students learn how to use every single of movement of the Tai Chi Form for self-defense purposes.

In 1993 I donated to the Salt Lake CIty BIG BROTHERS and BIG SISTERS organization 25 free one year scholarships of my Shaolin Chi Mantis Tai Chi Kids Program at the local YWCA.

Combining that with my daughter bringing her friends to class created a large Tai Chi youth program. I had to schedule an additional time slot twice per week just to accommodate the kids.

This led me to redefine my curriculms and over the next few years I experimented extensively with new teaching techniques and read many library books on training kids.

The CRANE WARS competition was one of the games I invented for the youth program that the adult classes really wanted to have added also.

So, now I have programs and curriculums designed for ages 6 to 9, ages 10 to 16, and 13 to 20.

During the 1990s, the Utah Governor's office employed Shaolin Chi Mantis to perform seminars, workshops, and sometimes hired us to perform at various middle schools, high schools, and government parties and special awards ceremonies.

The Chief of Police of Salt Lake City, recognized the success of our programs and spoke of how 80% of the cities crimes were occurring between 3:00 and 6:00 on weekdays, due to kids having nothing to do between school and dinner.

With the support and financial backing of many Utah organizations, government funding, and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Tai Chi Youth was born.

Realizing the success of the Shaolin Chi Mantis youth programs, Buddha Zhen stretched the SCM Beginner Program into a 3-year program so that all the original curriculums would be utilized at a pace more youths could accomplish.

This Tai Chi Teen program is still offered for local youths in Buddha Zhen's neighborhood. Buddha Zhen usually teaches these for free to any neighborhood kids who haven't joined a Tai Chi Youth school.

Founded in 1996 by Buddha Zhen Shen Lang, this 3-year curriculum has proven to be the best youth-at-risk program in the world.

With years of experience developing Kung Fu curriculums since 1984, Buddha Zhen wrote the TAI CHI YOUTH CURRICULUM GUIDE, that is still in use today without any alterations.

Class by class breakdowns maintain quality and consistency that has proven to cure more maladies and disorders than any other exercise program.

Combined with group readings of traditional Buddhist Dharma and Daoist principles, the students are also required to know something about every major religion in the world to pass their Belt Tests.

Buddha Zhen has received special Tai Chi training for teaching seniors from several other Tai Chi instructors over the years.

Realizing that most of his programs were designed to improve health, lose weight, gain confidence, and balance their lives -- Buddha Zhen has designed a unique program for seniors.

Simplifying a few movements of the Tai Chi Form, and minimizing the workouts, these new curriculums challenge seniors to strengthen both their body and their minds.

Besides learning the slow motion meditation breathing methods of the Tai Chi Form, seniors also learn to stretch and move and improve their posture and eating habits.

This is the original and traditional Shaolin Chi Mantis program that Zhen Shen-Lang designed from teaching classes 1984 to 1992.

"In 1992 I was hired by the Utah Governor, Mike Leavitt to teach at a maximum security prison. That was the year I completed the entire 7-year curriculum for Shaolin Chi Mantis with a full breakdown of what to teach in every class, what the bookwork was, and what the Belt Testing Requirements would be, and with the advice and approval of Kung Fu masters worldwide, determined what Shaolin Kung Fu Forms and Chinese weapons should be taught in each semester and in what order..." begins Buddha Zhen's lengthy description of his lengthy curriculum of 7 years.

This daunting task created the first Chinese Belt Ranking System so that Kung Fu students could compete in Karate tournaments and know what level and rank they were to enter.

As Chairman of Amateur Athletic Association's Chinese Martial Arts, Buddha Zhen rewrote the rules for their Push Hands competitions which are a national event now.
